Post subject:  In need of a cart for a heavy PA14
Any recommendations?

I have been using this since I purchased my yak.

The first issue was that the frame twisted and would not allow the tires to roll straight. Yesterday when we were out on Cooper we noticed that the weld for the support that has the black Hobie cover broke. I really am not happy with the Hobie carts, although they offer many models I don't think any are truley made to handle the weight of the PA + contents. I wonder what else you guys are using? Let me know if you have anything for sale.

I am thinking Ctug next but would like to hear reviews or other options.

I believe Hobie will replace your cart under warranty as the weld failure issue is not uncommon.....contact your dealer.

I had an Outback and ended up buying a C-tug after using the Hobie Trax cart....it was a pain to rotate the Outback to insert the cart and the Trax wheels were too fragile for where I was launching.
The strap on the C-tug would not cinch up with out slipping....and I followed the instructions very carefully......I changed the strap out for a "tie down strap" like Hobie sells.....these straps have a spring loaded clamp that does not slip.
The C-tug will handle the weight of a PA14, but I don't know if the pads are wide enough apart to adequately support the wider hull of a PA-14.

Now, I use a trailer for my PA-14 and the cart went with my Outback when I sold it.

I prefer launching power boat style off my trailer but with so many lakes down in N Texas I have to have a suitable plan B. I will be taking it back to my dealer hopefully the carts are covered by warranty. Thanks for the reply!

Made my own cart after struggling with the Hobie stab in cart. Pics in the link in my signature. Since those pictures I have substituted 16 inch lawn tractor wheels and tires (purchased at Lowes) for additional flotation on soft surfaces. Tried the soft wheels and they are get bulges in them and don't roll evenly.

The Hobie cart is definitely one area that Hobie needs to seriously address. I had one of the "Heavy Duty" carts fail as well. My dealer did replace it under warranty with no questions asked, but also mentioned that it's by far not the first one to be returned.

Apparently the cart works fine on normal flat surfaces. The issue arises when you try to traverse any unlevel terrain. If one wheel strikes an object that the other doesn't it creates too much torque on the cart frame and causes the failure of the welds. The cart is just tack welded instead of a solid weld and it just won't hold up. I'm not talking abuse either! Going from grass to a sidewalk with a 2" concrete lip was what caused mine to fail.

My worry now is that I have moved out of state from where I purchased my cart. I'm hoping that if it becomes an issue again that I won't get any hassle from the local Hobie dealer about replacement since I did not purchase it from their shop!

But welld issues were corrected some time ago.

Best cart for a PA14 is the PA UNI dolly ... BY FAR.

Oh Gee ......... another product marketed for the PA that doesn't work on the PA .........


Wow ......... the Dolly recommended for the PA is over $500 ............ it also looks too big to be transported .......

Obviously you have not tried this or seen one used.

This cart WORKS and works VERY well for transporting over sand or rough terrain. One person can move a loaded PA14 or Tandem Island over soft sand VERY easily. It is super easy to load too.

The cart shown is the Island version, so is a little wider that the PA one.

This cart fully disassembles for transport. Wheels come off, handle comes off. Yes, too large for carrying on your boat, but this is the same for most any other boat in this class size. Carts have to be larger to work as demanded by consumers.


There are less expensive alternatives, but seeing the frustration of some loading or pulling loaded kayaks over terrain with smaller plug-in carts... this is a great solution.

I believe MM was referring to the plug in cart that is routinely sold to owners of PAs as being suitable for their vessels.

They all work. Just some cart versions are more robust or easier to load or easier to carry with you on the kayak. You just need to make a choice for what is best for your situation.

MMiller, is my Hobie cart covered under warranty? I plan on taking it to my dealer tomorrow. I am looking forward to seeing what else they have available to help haul my PA14. Thanks for the suggestions

There is a new Hobie scupper hole cart out, one with 30cm wheelez wheels.
This is the one to get for pa14.

I effectively made my own just like it, before it became available from Hobie.

Don't bother making your own, the wheels are $140 for pair. Simply doesn't make sense, buy it ready made and with warranty from Hobie.

Broken welds are typically covered by warranty. We claim them back to Wheeleez for credit.

I have been using my Trax 2 on my PA and have had no problems. It works very well :!:
