Post subject:  Battery install
Wondering if anyone is using the battery install kit that uses AA batteries? I'm still kinda skeptical and mounting a battery in my PA 14. I'm not going to use electronics that much and wondering how long this setup last. Please advise

No on the AA batteries....go for the Hobie fish finder installation kit III....rechargeable 12 volt, 9 amp hour battery, charger, has mounting bracket, cables/wiring, tie wraps.....a no-brainer to install and very good quality.....you won't be very happy, if you install a lesser amp hour capacity AA battery set up and it runs dry/flat....
I have gone 21 hours with my 12 volt gel cell before recharging......my Humminbird fish finder/GPS has a built in volt meter, so I know the status of my battery.

It actually depends on what your trying to power....

A Humminbird PiranhaMax 170 can easily be powered by 8-AA batteries, but a color Lowrance Elite-5 Sonar/GPS may not even fire up with that low a power supply.

I used a battery pack consisting of 8-rechargeable batteries within a Ozark Trails waterproof box for years and was able to get 3-4 trips of 5-6 hours a shot on one charge (w/Himminbird 170).

I now use a Humminbird 12v7ah gel battery (w/charger) to power a Lowrance Mark-4 FF/GPS...several trips between charging. I store the box in the center hatch, sitting just aft of the tackle center (on a no-skid pad).

It powers my Lowrance HDS-5 all weekend (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday) - about equivalent to 24 hours. That's all I have ever tried for in between charging.

I put it in the back hatch of my PA-12. Had to modify the plastic tray by cutting out the dividers, but I didn't use the hatch for anything anyway. It fits perfectly, and is water tight. Then ran the wires below deck to the wire clam under the mounting board and just under where I mounted the HDS-5. Looks great, and works great. What more could one ask for?

I run a H'Bird Piranha Max on my Prangler 14, also. I bought a sealed 7-ah battery at my local RV dealer and simply bungee it to the mast post under the front hatch. The finder is mounted in the sail mast, so the power lines are nice and short. I've never had the battery die, so I can't tell you how long it might last.

I have a Gel 10 ah, and not an 8 ah. Bought it from the same place as in the link.
Battery measures 5-7/8"x2-1/2"x4-1/2" high. (Figured you might want to measure
your back hatch and relieve your worries about whether or not it will fit.) If you decide to
go with the 8 ah, then battery naturally would be a little smaller. I think mine cost $19+change - not much more. I jumped the gun on the original price by looking at the link
and thinking that I had the 8 ah. Should have checked before posting original message.

Charge same with 1.5 amp charger. Takes about 10 hours to get full charge. But that's after I have run the battery down for the whole weekend. Charging time for daily use would be much less.
