So what happens if you dump it upside down into the drink? Are they waterproof?

Most fish finders by Lowrance and the other major brands are sealed and waterproof. If you're looking at a particular model, download the manual from their website and start there. Lowrance does use the terms sealed and waterproof with a lot of their units. That's why rain doesn't hurt them and you can wash them off with a water hose. I would assume that if you turtle a kayak with a fish finder that it would probably survive fine if the kayak was flipped back over as long as it was not submerged for an extended period of time. Just my thoughts...

Lowrance has had problems with the "card slot" cover seal leaking as reported in the past by several guys....most tape over the cover to aid the seal and prevent leaks.
