I have a 2015 Hobie Pro Angler 14 and just experienced a stupidly bogus rudder failure... Basically, neither the rudder nor skeg are gravity dropping...this was unexpected of course, and having experienced it at a very busy ramp, I was put in a tight situation and harshed the fins on a brand new mirage drive...hateful... Anyway, I've looked and looked and I can only find info on "tightening" the steering...I don't see anything on how to go any further... Please help...thanks! |

May be pressure inside the hull that had distorted and "pinched" their recessed areas by "oil canning". See if you can reach under and pull free. |

It's not oil canning... they move quite easily by hand, just not by gravity...I'm guessing perhaps that the pivot point is gummed up or perhaps there's a spring issue...won't know until I dig deeper and I'm hesitant to do until i have some manner of diagram or instructions to keep me from doing harm to the mechanism or myself... |

Are the release lines hung up on something inside the hull? You can use a cell phone camera to look around inside. I would most suspect this if both the rudder and the keel just did this at the same time. |

Try checking if any of the foam blocks have moved inside the hull and are putting pressure or friction on the lines. It doesn't take much. Bare in mind that there is a piece of foam up inside the 'gunnel' area of the hull forward of where the skeg release line enters the hull on the 2015. I discovered that this was the cause of my skeg not dropping down freely with gravity. |

I had a situation where my rudder and skeg on my PA17 wouldn't drop by gravity, so I had to get out and drop them by hand. It took almost no pressure at all so I'm surprised gravity wouldn't do it. Long story short, I cleaned the pivot points and then doused it with lithium grease spray. No trouble since then and it has been at least 6 months. Just don't use WD-40 or anything like that. You want to use a dry grease. |
