Looking at ordering two PA12's, but need a solution to car top them (trailer is not an option). Getting a rack installed that will support 350lbs, so the weights not an issue. The crossbar width is 72", should be ok if the kayaks are touching. The question I have, can you nest the PA12's together like others have done with the Outbacks? So that instead of side by side, can we stack them? Worried the steering controls might be in the way. Any other suggestions appreciated?

PAs do not nest.

We figured it out, we purchased 2 PA14 360's and have them both on top of our Wrangler (side by side). Were using Yakima Heavy Duty cross bars, ran 2" PVC runners to spread the weight and support the hulls more than just cross bars (and they make loading easier). With 4 straps on each, at interstate at speed limit there is no movement at all. If there is a will, there is way. Tight lines!

In second picture, you have the driver side bow strap right in your field of vision. I find that to be irritating. If you run the bow straps to the center of your front bumper, they'll be out of your field of vision. Another advantage of running the bow straps to your front bumper is that they'll keep the wind from pushing your kayaks backward on your roof racks.

Thanks, but we run the front straps to the cat walk so we don't have to worry about straps rubbing the paint on the hood. The straps are off center from vision of field.

I placed a "roller loader" on the spare tire of my Jeep. No way could I pick up a PA. https://www.hobie.com/forums/viewtopic. ... er#p299327

The Warranty does not cover normal wear and tear, improper storage.

The runners are only connected at the far end and flex in the middle to conform to the hull. There are so many posts on line of others succesfully doing this. The issue with PVC seems to come when the pvc is not able to flex and conform to the hull.

Been storing them that way since 2003. Never an issue. You'll be fine. You won't have any warranty issues storing them that way. Unless of course you ratchet strap them into oblivion. P.S. Have you ever seen a dealer store their upside down in their showroom? Nope!

For the OP, regarding your straps, either run them to the front bumper or connect (bolt), hookup straps under the side of your hood then twist each strap. In addition I would run a couple cam straps thru your vehicle. Its a real pain with these racks come off.

Thanks, we travel with 4 straps on each Kayak. 2 straps in the middle go under the rails on the Kayaks, down to the main bars on the rack. We also have one strap on the front and on one the back of each kayak. We've traveled from the Canadian border in Maine all over the east coast, all the way down to the Florida Everglades, and then up to Tennessee at highway speed and off road without any issues.

After car topping for well over a year, we got bought a trailer. We want to be able to set up the kayaks for fishing before getting to the water. Also, we do use the kayaks more with the trailer than when we had to load them on top the jeep (less time and effort to get in the water). We do car top the kayaks between destinations with our RV, but once we get to the new destination, we use a trailer for the Kayaks. The trailer we have folds up and goes inside the jeep. Its the solution that works for us. Hope you find the best solution for you.
