I have an older outback, prob 1st generation, no bearings or threaded rod. The sprocket set screw will not hold the rod. Is it possible to replace or upgrade.?

Yes, you can get a sprocket and mast kit for that:

UPDATE KIT - GT SPROCKET
(2 GT SPROCKETS AND 2 V2 MASTS)
81129023 GT STANDARD MAST KIT
81129123 GTT TURBO MAST KIT
