I've read through as much as I can on this topic in the forums and I can't seem to find an answer. When using a Mast Stepper II type of system, is there a reason why you would not use the main halyard instead of the forestay? Is the halyard not strong enough? Not good for the comp tip? I tried it this past weekend and it seemed to work but it concerns me that I don't see any other examples using the halyard. Any thoughts or advice would be much appreciated.

My guess is that when using a gin-pole type system, the strength of the halyard may be questionable. Because of the low angles involved when doing a dead lift of the mast from horizontal, there is a lot of load on the forestay/lifting wire. The halyard may not break, but it may get "springy" depending on what size mast you're stepping and what diameter/type of halyard you're using. So maybe that's why using an actual metal wire is the preferred method.

Correct. Low angles make for higher loads. The halyard to the top of the mast would be a much lower angle than to the forestay.

The forestay to mast tang is a much stronger component as well. The halyard and masthead are not designed for the loads... plus the stretch mentioned.

I use my jib halyard. Just hook to my bridle, yank her up and cleat it down. Gives me all the time I need to hook up the forestay by myself.
