Hello everybody! I just recently purchased an 81' H16. I also own a Newport 17 that my wife and I started sailing on. My question is, can I use a getaway main sail on the H16 to eliminate the boom? I don't mind the boom, but my wife prefers the simplicity of boomless. Thanks!

Pretty sure this would not work. The foot of the Getaway main would extend beyond the rear traveler, so a boom is needed. Sheeting without on would pull the clew forward and deeply bag the sail... unsailable.

Anyone actually try?

Thank you for the quick reply! Any ideas on which sails could possibly work for a 16 with no boom without getting one custom made? Maybe the T2 main sail?

How about having a sailmaker add a bottom batten and a clew plate like the Getaway has to your 16 sail, and sail it boomless?

I would try to find a T2 main to try. I've thought about that in the past. Same basic mast AFAIK.

The problem will probably be that the traveler position (fore and aft) needs to be pretty much perfect for the square-top sail to work right.
