Post subject:  Need help with logistics

Okay, I'm pretty new to owning a boat. I've got a getaway and I'm heading to surfside beach, sc this summer. I've mostly been sailing on a lake near home here and it's simple, I go to the boat ramp, rig it, put it in, and sail off. The beach is not so simple. I can't find a boat ramp (searching online) in or around surfside beach, sc, and I'm not sure on the rules of beaching. Can I get some beach wheels and roll it down the beach anywhere I can find a spot or are there designated areas? Any help would be greatly appreciated especially from anyone with local knowledge. Thanks alot guys.

Hey there,

I don't know the particular regulations for Myrtle Beach, but in the most recent (May/June) issue of HCA news, there was a feature article by J.D. Solomon about sailing in Myrtle Beach (The Finish of a Lifetime). Maybe Matt Bounds could put you in touch with him or get an answer from him.

An alternative would be to contact the Chamber of Commerce there.

If they do allow it, beach wheels do a good job of moving the boat around the beach, especially since as I recall the sand there is somewhat firm.

Good luck.

I would definitely check with the local authorities (Chamber of Commerce is a good idea) to find out what their restrictions are.

Guaranteed there are some.

Most beaches do not allow access, nor do they allow beaching the boat from the water, due to safety concerns with swimmers. Whenever an event is held (like the one described in the article), special permission is obtained (permit), and usually there is some crowd control by the lifeguards to permit safe beachings and launchings.
