Is there an overview of supposed speed records in the various Hobie models?

There is no list of actual speed testing that I am aware of. I did an estimated one years ago for brochures. I rated the expected speeds from near 15 kts to just over 20 for the bigger cats as I recall.

Some of our Club members have started logging their day trips using a GPS, and they subsequently download the data onto a Google map as a record of where they've been, times etc. Then they save this on some sort of Google website similar to Picasa. I do not know if this technology records specific speeds, although I do recall our Commodore reporting 30 kilometers per hour during a good squirt of wind in September, according to his GPS reading. That translates from Canadian to about 18.75 mph, or 16.4 knots. Our Commodore is known for his conservative approach to sailing, and is not known for his speed, he drives a 1982 (heavy) H18.

That same windy weekend, my wife and I sailed up river to 12 Mile Island and back, 7 miles each way or 14 miles in 2 hours, again with a couple of real good squirts of wind. We smoked every single mono hull and even a Corsair Trimaran. Hobie 18's are still one of the best sailing cats out there.

If I remember, I will ask at our AGM this Friday about speed readings and where you can visit the Logs. After I have given the slide show on sailing a Lagoon 440 in the BVI. Now that was a special treat, although my wife did catch my tongue hanging out when we visited Peter Island, and I saw a couple of Waves on the beach. Wonder how fast you can go on a Wave in the Trade Winds?

Back in the mid-70s Hobie claimed in some advertisement, or maybe in a Hotline article, that the H16 had been clocked at 26.2 mph in some speed trial event in Long Beach Harbor. Can anyone at Hobie Cat dig through the archives and verify that?

they advertised an "official record" of 25.9 mph in the Hobie 16 brochure that came with my new 1981 boat.

It would be kind of fun if the class started keeping track of speed records for the various boats. The GPS technology is so widely available these days it wouldn't be hard to do.

I remember the 25.9 mph speed as well. I don't know where it came from but I bought my H-16 new in '85. I have had my GPS on the boat and registered just under 18 mph with my grandson out on the wire. There were times we were going faster but I couldn't take the time to look at the GPS, My guess is that we hit over 20. I keep the GPS set on mph rather than knots because I use it in the cars to check my speedometers. The 25.9 mph seems very possible with the right conditions and crew.

I'm surprised more sailors here haven't claimed personal speeds of 20+ mph on a cat. About two years ago me and a buddy hit 21 mph for a few moments on my H16 with one guy trapped out. It was blowing offshore and very gusty but not choppy and no waves. We saw a big wind line coming and got ready for it. The GPS was pinging away and registered a max speed of 21 mph. It was a great day and we never flipped.

Later, I downloaded the tracks and could see the speed between points on the track. I know a lot of you guys have higher speeds than ours that day. Anybody have a 22 mph day? 23?
