I was on the water Saturday and saw from a distance what appeared from astern to be a Laser with a Sunfish sail. When it came ashore I walked down the beach to find a mid-seventies Hobie Monocat in remarkably pristine condition (obviously garaged for many years). Anyone have any history of this model? Was it a predecessor of the H-14? If there is a Hobie cat museum somewhere this particular boat should be in it rather than out on the water.

It was introduced in 1973 and only made for a few years.

The hull / deck are made of vacu-formed ABS plastic (like some hot tubs are today). The interior was filled with foam to provide stiffness, since the ABS sheet has little strength on its own.

Lots of hull/deck seam failures and waterlogging (wonder where all the admonishments against "Can't I just fill it with foam?" come from?) doomed the boat from the outset.

The Hobie Bravo is its modern incarnation.
