Post subject:  Just Moved to San Francisco - Need Help!

Hi there,
I just moved to San Fran and am having trouble finding a local Hobie club. I was wondering if anyone knew of something/someone in the area that I could contact?

I did find a fleet (Fleet 281 I think) but they are based about 90 minutes away from me and because I am in dental school that kind of time in transport is not going to work.

Also, because the water is really cold here I need to figure out what gear to buy. i am getting some hiking pants but will those be warm enough? Will i need to wear a wetsuit under them? Also, if the hiking pants are ok on their own what should i get for my top?

Thanks everyone!

Justin

Justin,

I'm inland in Sacramento so I'm not sure what fleets would be closest to you, but there are a few, I'm sure they will chime in shortly.

As for gear it depends on your comfort level. I made the switch to a dry suit many years ago and never have used a wetsuit since unless a REALLY warm day or i'm lake sailing. I've gone to a Goretex drysuit on my second go-around a couple years ago and it is awesome. Very comfy and warm without feeling like you ae inside a plastic bag.

At a minimum I'd say wet suit with some kind of splash top.

Welcome to the area!

Justin

There is Hobie Fleet 20 most of their events are inland in the valley. There is also Redwood City. There is a large group of cats there. H-16 , F-18 , F-20C.

Justin,

I'm new to the boards but have been in NorCal for many years and I'm just getting back into the Hobie Nation. I work in the Financial District of downtown San Francisco but live in the Sacramento area, commuting in once a week. Anytime you want to get together we could grab a cup of coffee and compare notes. Welcome to S.F.!

Figuring out what to wear in San Fran is simple...
DRYSUIT!!

I have always worn mine whenever I've sailed up that way - and you can't go wrong. Kokatat makes a nice one - so does Stohlquist... highly recommend either!!!

Has anyone used/heard anything about the Gull/Gill drysuits? They are stocked at West Marine... Looks like i will spend more on my outerwear than my boat tho! Anyone perhaps have a secondhand suit they want to part ways with?

Look up SFF18.org.

Fleet 240, once a very active fleet out of Santa Cruz, is now basically defunct.

Get a 4/3 wetsuit, or as mentioned an nice drysuit. Don't skimp, the bay is cold. Kokatat.

The bay isn't really forgiving, always carry a handheld VHF on your person.

Jeremy, as for fleet 240 the "Manning" Clan is looking to revitalize fleet 240.
Stan "the man" will be working the beach part and I have been "volunteered" for the racing part.

I know that you put a tremendous amount of effort along with others over the years and are busy with other pursuits - thank you.

WOW! Those Kokokat Goretex dry suits are $800 and up. You are right, that is more than I paid for the boat! I may have to 'settle' for something less and keep this on my long term wish list. Fortunately, during our 4-5 month season the temps are ok for just swim trunks. This would allow me to get another 2-4 months added to the season, perhaps.

Justin,

Check out Hobie Fleet 2. Technically we're located in Grass Valley, but most members are in Sacramento. We're more of a laid back social fleet. There are a few racers, but most of us just enjoy fun sailing.

We've finished our official sailing season, but take a look next spring/summer. We do some great camping sailing trips.
