Post subject:  Need to find a vacation spot with Hobies available

I have been put in charge of finding a place to take the family (5 of us, with upper teenage kids) between Christmas and New Years this year.

From a purely selfish standpoint, I want to find a place (resort, rental condo, etc.) near or on a beach with a beachcat(s) available.

I will consider anyplace warm, since my wifes goal is to get out of the Michigan cold for a week. As always, I am trying to keep the costs down, but willing to fly everyone there if needed.

Thanks,

Bitter End Yacht Club. http://www.beyc.com/

Expensive and worth it. Just like Disney, but for sailors.

There's a place in Greece too that sailing is the main attraction.

Sandals resorts have Hobie Waves at most locations.

I guess I'm missing something. What's so selfish about that? :D

I guess he means relative to the interests of the rest of the fam. At least that's how it is in my household.

I'll be in the Tampa area between Christmas and New Years and am also trying to either either find a local boat to charter/rent or convince the wife that dragging the H18 down and back is a good idea.

Grand Shores West in North Redington Beach, FL (half-way between Clearwater Beach & St Pete Beach) is a time-share condo with Hobie Waves and kayaks available to residents at no charge. The condos are fairly basic, but the beach front is fantastic, and the weekly rent is reasonable. The neighborhood is mostly residential, but there are several nice restaurants nearby.

There's also a Doubletree Hotel about a block south which has a Getaway, a Wave, and lots of other water toys available for rent.

Although I have no personal experience with either one of them, a couple of Hobie rental places come to mind in south Florida.

Holiday Water Sports on Ft. Myers Beach has Waves and Getaways I believe.

In Miami there is Miami Catamarans. He is a member of this forum.

As a Detroit native I can attest that either one would beat Michigan in December. :)

Grande Bahia Principe in Jamaica had Waves when I was there a couple years ago. I'd verify first though. That resort was new then. Boats get trashed and many times resorts don't fix or replace them.

Come to Orlando, see the tourist stuff, then over to Melbourne on the east coast and rent a Wave or Getaway from www.performancesailandsport.com

Or find a cruise out of Port Canaveral. Nearly all of the stops on their cruises have Waves for rent.

Or just come down and help me get my Hobie 18 back together and we'll take it out.

Hi All,

Thanks for the great ideas! I just got home from a business trip and will check them all out today.

We are looking at Bahama's now, but flights are REALLY expensive, so we may end up in Florida.

Hi Matt,
That Bitter End Yahct Club is awesome! Like you say, not cheap, but beautiful.

I can't afford to take the whole family down, but wife wants to go there without the kids later this year. She has never been on the Hobie and is talking about taking the sailing lessons!

Good news! We decided to book flights, so we now have the dates and a rough location. We are flying into Miami and are looking for places in the keys, and I think we will end up in Key Largo.

I found a rental place in Key Largo, so we should be all set! Thanks for the help everyone, I'll let you know how things go.

Be sure to visit the Upper Keys Sailing Club while you're there. They're a great bunch of folks, who just hosted the IWCA Wave Nationals (weekend before last). And there are Hobies for rent at Founder's Park, just down the road in Islamorada.
