I've been trying to figure out what kind of cat I just bought. It was advertised as a Hobie - but it doesn't quite look right. It's 17', and the hulls look more like a Prindle except for the tramp pylons...which look like a Hobie.

It also has the following serial number on the starboard hull:

4750 1700 AUCM

Any ideas?

Search "Hobie 17 images" and you'll see the same hulls as yours. Based on those photos,I would say you have a Hobie 17.
Check the FAQs on the Forum home page for lots of info. Even how to read the serial numbers, although I found it didn't quite work for my 1983 Hobie 16.

BTW, are you the Smackdaddy from SailNet?

Definitely NOT a Hobie.

The hull shape looks like a Prindle, however I don't recall them building a boat with a raised tramp frame.

It is not a Hobie 17. They look like this...

I would also say not a Hobie, the front of your pontoons look like they curve in like a Prindle, and the center of your tramp looks like it has a cross bar which is not typical of any Hobie.

Yeah - same Smack, different forum.

And, as everyone is saying here, it sure doesn't seem to be a Hobie. But it doesn't seem to be a Prindle either. It's definitely a mystery.

Hobie stamps their name on the corner casting, if you check out the boat in person, might check the castings to see if the manufacturer of this one also put his name there.

I believe it is a prindle 16or 15 what ever they called it.

It looks like you found a stumper. It looks like a rip off between Prindle hulls and a Hobie raised tramp. Post it on thebeachcats.com photo gallery for more help.

Prindle 16 had its Main Cross Bar attached to the hulls just like a H18. Prindle claims their better due to more bouyant Hulls, they are taller and have more volume. By being taller they do not need the elevated tramp.

Yeah - definitely doesn't seem to be a Prindle. I think skip nailed it - it's a strange combo of design between Hobie and Prindle. I just wish I knew who made the thing.

I did post the photos, etc. over at thebeachcats - they're stumped too...although there were photos of another one of these in their mystery boat gallery.

Wish we had more pics, a rear view would maybe help. Even if this was made up of several boats there would have to be markings somewhere on the boat. Looks like it might be fast!! :P

I look over all the major components and haven't found any further markings yet. Just that serial no. on the starboard transom.

And - yeah, it does look kind of fast (after some serious work)!
