Does anyone know if you can dye white sta-set lines to another color? I have white with red specks for my main sheet and white with blue specks for the jib sheet. It's not enough difference when sailing solo and scrambling to grab a line.

Thanks,

Mark

Hi Gary,

Yes, I'm aware that I could buy a new colored line. I was just wondering if I could save a few bucks by simplying dyeing the brand new one that I already have.

Thanks,

Mark

I believe there is a polyester dye that can be used for the lines. Try a online search. If your line has a high cotton content on the cover, then regular fabric dye will also work, otherwise find a polyester dye.

My sheet lines are New England Ropes Sta-Set, so I just called their technical support. I was told that it could be done but that a special polyester dye would need to be used and that rigging shops would have it. When asked about using the drugstore RIT dye, he didn't have an answer and said to cut a small piece and try it. So maybe I'll give that a try. I'm not too optimistic.

I use the Robline and it will dye up nice. Only 2 of the 3 strands take dye so you end up with a white speckle in the solid color.

RIT clothes dye is what I use.

I believe the Robline that Rich is referring to is their "Racing Sheet", which is a nylon/dyneema blend. As you have noted, Sta-Set is a polyester line, so RIT may or may not work. I think your plan of testing a small piece sounds like a good one- I'd also run the piece through the washing machine to make sure its colorfast before it bleeds color all over you/your boat!

Let us know how it goes, I'm curious to see if this works.
