Can they be used to connect shrouds? That is the way my boat was rigged when I got it.

That's a bad idea in my opinion. I've had several fail on me for no apparent reason. It's not a big deal if it happens on a tiller, but a shroud or forestay will ruin your day.

I had a quick pin crap out on my traveler this summer. The retaining balls just fell out and nothing was holding it in place. I use them all over my boat but never for the side stays. I don't trust them.

I use SS bolts and ss nylock nuts wherever possible on my 21SE and the Classic Hobie 16
Only use a nylock nuts once on critical areas
This has worked for me and it will probably work for you

Never use a quick pin to secure your standing rigging, they can fail in multiple ways. The ball can get stuck and not hold, pin is hollow and can break (one actually broke on a friends boat), it could be bumped and accidently release, etc. Now don't get me wrong, I love quick pins in the right places, I use 5 on my boat, i.e., connect the hiking stick to the rudder cross bar, connect the main sheets lower block to the travler, connect the main sheets upper block to the boomlet, connect jib blocks to jib clew plate and for the forstay for ease of raising and lowering the mast (I back this one up with a standard pin and ring once the mast is up). :wink:

I don't use a quick pin in my forestay, but I do use one to connect the jib tack to the stay adjuster on the bridal. If that one fails, I'll have to come in for a pit stop, but at least the mast won't fall.

My shrouds stay permanently attached with clevis pins with split rings taped up with electrical tape. I am not a fun of quick pins. These may look convenient, but may get very inconvenient when they fail...

Once you get efficient with split rings, it just takes seconds to put in. Then quick pins only give a marginal time savings.

What I use are small carabiners -- one on the downhaul and other one to connect boom with the main block. I switch to a conventional shackles for heavy air only. These are cheap and quick to connect.

I just pinch the tape over the ring and tip on the pin but not sure that's even the right way.
