Post subject:  How old?

From another post:

<<I know this is a weird topic but after reading the post about Hobie being dated.

I just want to see how old other sailors on here are. I know I am one of the younger one's. This might also help Hobie see what their market is and also see where it is lacking. If I am correct most of you all will be over 40. There will not be many under 25, granted I could be wrong but that is my opinion. That is kinda sad considering the younger generation has more people online than anyone, just few are coming here.

Thanks guys I just want some info!

Good idea about the poll. I have added my vote but for those reading this I am 43.

I also belong to a forum on British sports cars (an other hobby of mine) and the demographics of that group seems to be the same, with most of them over 40 as well (judjing from a recent thread there about what music they like to listen to while driving - and it sounded like the top ten list from when I was in grade school).

All that to say that the comment as to the younger folks being more an online crowd is valid. If you factor that in then you see that the demographic for cat sailing might be older. Sad to think it because I got hooked on it when I was in high school. Both my kids (13 and 15) were not keen on the H18 when I first talked about it but the second they saw it and for sure the second I sheeted in the first time they were both hooked and as keen as I was back in the '70s when that first happened to me. Perhaps what is needed to get young folks interested again is to expose them to the fun of it.

Though the glass is half empty side of me thinks that it is the 'instant gratification' culture that is preventing new folks from getting into this. After all with these boats the fun comes at the cost of having to learn something (you can't just dirve it like a car as is the case with a PWC), you have to take the time to set it up (you can't just drop it off the trailer and go like the PWC) and you don't see the sexy young kids all over them in the music videos and popular press (as is the case with PWC and all sorts of other things that are big with that crowd).

I ramble on too much but the water is now too cold for me to sail and I have to do something until spring. Maybe I should go for a ride in the old car :)

Don't need a pole or posts to prove the truth of current demographics. Any marketing will show the Millennial generation ('82 to present) is the same size as the Baby boomers ('47 to '64),
76 million people.

I'll be 49 tomorrow and will spend the day helping weighin boats at the Hobie 18/20 Nationals. I'll bet the average age there will be somewhere in the mid to upper 40's.

Age is a state of mind. Sorry I could not make the H-17 NA's to bring up the average from the noted 58.3. 70 next month, but still younger than a certain Race Director.

I am 44, I have 2 children that are very interested in sailing one is 7 and the other if 16 (17 end of Oct) and 2 more that kind of like to go, ages 15 and 17.

You all need to each have 4 and get at least 2 involved so we can double our numbers. :)
