Post subject:  transporting a hobie cat
hi all, i apologize if this is not the right forum for this, but how do you guys usually transport the hobie cats from one country to another (for the folks that had to move one). i am not an owner of a hobie cat yet, but i found a few very good options for me to purchase in the UK. Any ideas on affordable transportation from the UK to Greece? i have not been able to find any company to give me a quote yet :(

thank you so much in advance! i have been dying to purchase a hobie cat of any size. we got great winds in the northeastern Aegean where i go in the summers.

while not specific to a Hobie, I have seen instances of boats shipped worldwide in a standard 40' container. the example that comes to mind is Farrier Marine in New Zealand now shipping their F22.

I imagine you'd contact a shipper to order a container, which has a lot of space for only a Hobie. Perhaps they have a service for combining 'less than carload' shipments together into one container, going to the same destination.

I was going to suggest you go get it with a car/trailer, but a 4,000 mile round trip through 10 countries could get a bit expensive with the price of gas in Europe - not to mention dealing with border crossings . . . don't what to think of what going through the countries of the former Yugoslavia would be like. Every border guard would have their hand out for a "crossing fee".

You could get it boxed up at a Hobie dealer in the UK (using the boxes from a recently unpackaged new boat) and put in a container with other cargo. The mast is a problem - not so much the size, but there's a good chance it could be bent.

I think no matter what method you end up with, the cost will be €€€€ (expensive, Euros).

thank you guys for the ideas. i was afraid this was going to be hard :(
i was told by a shipping company that the 40 standard container might not work because the hobie cat is too wide (2.4meters in width).....i am trying to avoid disassembling.

you may not have any choice but to disassemble the boat. it is probably safer and cheaper to ship too.

the problem is that the mast can't be disassembled.

Is is impossible to just buy a boat (new or used) after you get to Greece? I thought Hobies were relatively popular in Europe.

Contact an English freight forwarder to help with the move. They can arrange for everything to be done (boxing, transporting, documents, etc.), and it will be easier and cheaper than driving the boat yourself. Or, contact a European Hobie dealer to see what options he may offer.
