Cleaning Salt Corrosion

I picked up an old salt water Hobie 16 this weekend, and am wondering if it's possible and how to clean off all this nasty salt corrosion on the aluminum. It's in a pretty serious state of neglect. See pics below:

Wow, that's pretty ugly. The rudder castings I would put in my blast cabinet, but the masthead won't fit...

Put a circular wire brush in your electric drill and have at it. It should clean it up pretty well. I use my drill press for smaller pieces and it works great.

Leave it alone unless you are willing to re-anodize it. With a boat that old, you have other issues to cover first.

It has turned into a fully disassembly and part-out operation. All I can say is that this type of corrosion is a mess, but will clean up with enough mechanical force or strong enough acid.

That is mostly pitting and not deposits. You can't really clean pitting. Leave it alone, sail it, and if you want better looking parts look for them on craigslist or on this site. I have at least 10 sets of those in a pile my back yard that look better than that. Those parts are cheap...
