I just bought a 2002 Getaway. I got a screaming deal on it so I couldn't pass it up.

It is currently rigged in my front yard so I can practice setting it up before I take it out for the first time.

My question is:

What angle is the mast supposed to be at? I would think it should be at perfectly straight (90 degrees, but it seems to be tilting a slight bit to the rear. Is that the way it is supposed to be?

Do I need to keep loosening the side stays and pulling on the line that holds the jib, until it is at a 90 degree angle?

I also need to learn the correct verbiage, but bear with me.

Mike

Yeah, I get to be the first.

Yes, the mast is supposed to be leaned backwards. This is called mast RAKE, I am not sure how far backwards or what angle it is supposed to be at. I know my hobie 14 that didn't have daggers like the getaway needed alot of rake ( leaned back very far). This helped get the weight back on the rudders so that tacking was easier and so that you didn't pitchpoll as often. I guess that alot of rake would make sense on the getaway also but I would check with someone who knows more about that boat. You are going to be able to sail no matter where it is but it might be better in certain locations.

As for the verbage, just read around, you can quickly learn alot by going back to the beginning of this forum and just starting reading anything that seems important. There are alot of really good tips contained in these pages!

On a last note, have fun be care and always wear you pfd.
