Looking for a comfy nonconstraining pfd for sailing my cats. Trying to decide between a self inflating or kayak type vest. I need one that would fit over my trap harness . What do u use?

With an auto inflating pfd are there issues with premature deployment caused by the wet sailing conditions on a cat?

I would not use an inflating vest when sailing. They auto ones can inflate when wet and a manual one requires that you are conscious and able to pull the inflater cord. Of course I would recommend a Hobie Stohlquist high waist vest. Very comfortable. Does not push up when sitting.

I use a fishing/kayak style vest. It's comfy and has lots of pockets.

We have both the Hobie PFDs and Onyx self-inflating PFDs.
I don't wear the self-inflating ones on big wind days, because of the danger of capsize. We haven't had a problem with premature inflation from splashing water; the tablet that melts to deploy the vest is pretty well protected from splash. If you forget, however, and wade into the water to launch or recover, it will inflate!
2 things about the self-inflating ones. 1) They go off instantly, like an airbag! The first time we capsized with them on, the velcro was tight and only one side of each of our vests opened up, so the other side was huge and hit hard. My wife said it felt like being punched, and she had a bruise on her jaw. 2) If they do inflate while you're out sailing (like a capsize), now you're stuck with an inflated vest for the rest of the day's sail. You can let out some of the air, but it's still not terribly comfortable.
That said, my wife pretty much always wears her Onyx PFD, and tells me I'd better not capsize her!

I like the feel and fit of a neoprene ski jacket, unfortunately I have not been able to find any with pockets.

This is the type I have. They have adjustable straps and lots of storage pockets. Image
