I am in the market for a replacement for my dented Hobie 16 mast. I've found a couple within a few hours of me, but how the heck do I pick them up? Safest way maybe to take the boat off the trailer and lash the mast to the trailer and transport it that way? Also though I might be able to let it hang out of the back up of my pickup with the tailgate down and run a line out to the tang to help support it. Any Advice? |

I agree, use the boat trailer. Just keep in mind that without the boat on the trailer, the aft end of the mast will be sitting much lower to the ground than usual (and the forward end of the mast much higher). There is a good chance you will need to push the mast farther forward on the trailer than usual or use some type of prop to hold the aft end up away from the ground. In the past when doing this, I've used the boat box as a prop to hold the mast up. You definitely want a flag on the mast too, since it will be much less visible to other drivers without the boat being there. sm |

Why take the boat off the trailer? Why not leave the old mast home and pick the new one up with the boat on the trailer? I would feel safer pulling a boat and trailer since it is easier for other drivers to see than to pull an empty trailer that would not be as visible. |

I strapped one to the roof of my Astro van once. It was sticking out front and rear. It was tied down to the roof rack and to the corners of the bumpers so it couldn't shift. If you had a makeshift ladder rack on the rear of your truck you could do something similar. |
