Post subject:  Will 20 Deg. Temperatures Damage My Sails?

I am moving my Getaway from Michigan to Florida and I would like to pack the boat up a few days before leaving. That means my sails will be in the catbox in 20 deg. to 40 deg. temperatures for about 4 days. Can those temperatures for that period of time damage my sails? Any input on this would be appreciated.

The cold temperature will not damage your sails. The only potential for damage would be the vinyl windows which can become stiff and brittle in lower temperatures. This would only be an issue if you were to unroll the sail for some reason you could potentially crack the window. Otherwise, sitting static in a sail box in cold temps will not hurt sails. The bigger risk is a mouse cozying up in your sails for the winter and chewing them to shreds.

The vinyl should be fine. My sails have spent every winter outside for 12 years (either in a shed or a catbox) and I have never had issues with the sails due to temps. I have handled them at ~5degF without any issues. I have had mouse problems. I hate mice.

Evidently this hard-core Hobie sailor doesn't worry about his sails in freezing weather.
