Post subject:  hobie 16 vs hobie getaway
Hello............NEW HERE.............would like to know which boat to buy the hobie cat 16 or getaway. I know one has a boom, one does not but I want to sail in the beautiful waters of the Philippines and wanted to know which boat to buy. Is there a small or big difference between the two boats? What is the speed difference between them? Are they both mostly maintenance free? Please tell me all you can :)

If you have thoughts of racing... the Hobie 16 is the best choice. If you sail recreationally, the Getaway is a great choice. It is also very durable, boomless and has lots of capacity for friends to join you. The 16 sails best with a crew under 300 lbs. The Getaway can handle a lot more weight.

The Getaway would be more durable due to the rotomolded plastic construction. The 16 is fiberglass. The 16 is lighter and easier to move on land... the Getaway has a forward trampoline which is great for kids. The Getaway would be more forgiving in sailing as the hulls have higher-volume, especially in the bows. It sails more smoothly. The 16 is powerful and is more unstable, but power is fun!

Echoing Matt's comments. I've got a Getaway, and I've sailed 16s.
If you want the fastest ride, then the 16 is faster than the Getaway, particularly in light wind. In heavy wind, you have to depower (sheet out the sail) the 16 so much to avoid capsizing, that I think they are about even.
The Getaway is more relaxed. The wings are comfortable and allow you to get your weight out without trapping out. You can carry 6 good sized adults on it without submerging the hulls. The boomless main is much less efficient, but easier to manage. The Getaway won't capsize as easily as the 16, but it's heavier to right by yourself.

So from what I understand tell me if this is correct.............both are fast, what is the top speed of each of these, wave, getaway and 18 ??

Not sure exactly, but roughly... capable of sustained speeds in higher winds:

Wave 18 knots maybe.

Getaway low 20s

H16 Mid 20s

Some footage I took of the Wave and Getaway at good speeds. Nice and breezy at the Bitter End YC... BVI.

Is the front black netting on the getaway good for holding people also? Are the side high sitting bars an extra option on the getaway or included on all getaway's ??

Yes, the front trampoline is awesome for cruising (lighter winds) with people up there. That is standard equipment.

The seat backrests are an option and well work it! A comfortable backrest when you sit on the hull and like being on the trapeze when sitting on them. Better performance in heavier winds. Gets your weight outboard a bit.

The front tramp is best used for children or very small people, it loads the front of the boat and slows it down. Also a very wet ride!
A big advantage of wings is the ride is dryer. You get above much of the splashing, so you are dryer and warmer. I haven't trapped off them yet. I used to trap off the wings of my Hobie 17, and that was a wild ride!

It's a Getaway if I had to choose 100%. I mean unless you want to race as other people suggest - 16 is like what, 15% faster?
