I have a Whirlwind Pentex mainsail I want to ship and I need advice.

1. How do I fold the sail? Will flaking/rolling work?
2. How are battens shipped?

I was planning to ship via UPS, but if there is a better option, then let me know.

Thanks.

Years ago, when Chip shipped my custom main and jib, the battens were shipped separately, in a cardboard tube.
I remember that the jib was flaked, and it took a while to get the creases out.
I cannot recall if the main was rolled or flaked, I think rolled....
For Pentex, rolling is always better, as creases can 'set up' and then there is a weak point.

Hope this helps.

Update: I loosely flaked and folded the main and shipped it in a box without any problems. The battens were a different story. FedEx wanted $311 to ship from California to Michigan, so I asked the airline (Delta), and the battens were less than the maximum length and the charge was for an extra bag - $30.

When I told my 12-year-old about my plan, he busted me for shipping the sails instead and saving about $80 by taking them on the plane, too.
