I'm not the most knowledgeable sailor here but in the absence of replies I'll take my shot.

A Hobie 14 is a single person boat. A Hobie 16 can be sailed solo or with another person. Yes you can put a jib on the H14, that is called the "turbo" model.

I’ve had both H14 turbo and the H16. Both are great beach cats but they’re different.

The 14 is VERY much a small boat and asking to carry even two large adults is going to be a challenge (it’s very tippy). The H14 (either with or without jib) is meant to be sailed solo or with a very light crew (kids). The jib adds some power and makes it a LOT easier to tack.

The H16 is a whole different game. Easily can handle two full-grown adults and can carry three full-size adults and still have a hell of a fun time. Lots more power than a H14. You can also single-hand a 16 unless it’s really blowing (and if you want to learn to trapeze, the 16 is more forgiving to learn on). The 16 isn’t that much heavier than the 14, so unless your planning to always sail solo or with one or two little kids, I’d recommend a 16 because it’s more capable when your friends ask for a ride (which they will).
