Hey folks,

I recently received an job offer in DC, so I'm considering moving down there. I've been up in Burlington, VT sailing on Lake Champlain for the last couple years, so I'm actually pretty excited to be somewhere with a longer season.

I'd appreciate any advice that folks have about storage in the area and just making connections in the area in general.

Thanks,
-Chris

Hi
You have several options depending on where you end up living/working. If you are in DC or Alexandria, VA, the closest is Washington Sailing Marina which is next to National Airport on the Potomac. They have mast up storage, there are catamarans there and a small Hobie Fleet. Close to home but sailing isn't as great.

About 45 minutes away is the Chesapeake Bay, sailing is better here and there are lots of yacht clubs. There are also some parks with launch facilities.

Further yet is Rehoboth Bay. This is about 2.5 hrs from DC but in my opinion it is a great sailing venue for Hobie's. Popular with windsurfing/kite boarding crowd too. There is a yacht club here (Rehoboth Bay Sailing Assoc) that has lots of Hobie's and an active fleet.

DC falls into Division 11 of the Hobie Class Assoc. You can visit their web site at http://www.div11.hobieclass.com/ for more information on Hobie sailing in the midatlantic in general.

There are a few other spots depending on where you end up but those the major ones. Email me if you need any more specifics or have questions.

Chris,

I currently live in Annapolis, MD (about 30-40 minutes NE of DC). I will be leaving this Friday for Burlington on my annual vacation. I will be camping at North Beach and will have my H18 with me. I will be there through the Chew Chew. If you want, stop by and I can fill you in on the cat sailing in the Annapolis area.

You can also check out a great cat fleet that is based on the West River just south of Annapolis. They have more than just Hobies and are very active. Their website is http://www.wrcra.org

I hope you enjoy living in the "south"

Okay first things first.... Rick thanks for the information. it was really helpful.

Second, Nick... Is it really time for the chew chew festival? I love that festival... As for living in the "South", I have a bit of experience with that one having lived in Savannah, GA... I'm just looking forward to being able to get Sweet Tea again... or at least I will if I head into VA. If you get a chance send me a regular email and we can exchange information. Perhaps we can get together. I've wanted to go out on a H18.
