Any of you guys live near South Padre Island, Tx? I think I may have jumped into buying a boat and would really like some help from someone who knows what they're doing. My dad sailed a lot..I mean a lot, but that was 23 years ago..........and it makes me nervous when we're setting the boat up in the yard and he says..yeah, I think that looks right-can't really remember.

In all honesty there are not that many things that can go wrong on a Hobie. They are not the most complicated things on the water.

What are you having trouble with, I am sure that a few of us can figure it out if you just ask that questions on here.

Well, I have a couple issues. For one, I don't know how to sail :) Since i got the boat a week or two ago, I've managed to read two entired books on sailing..so I think I have the concept down as much as I can. My dad sailed only one cat, and it was big..and a long time ago...the other stuff was Sunfish, that kind of stuff. I don't know if it's like riding a bike.

Also, the boat is an '81. I'm not sure what the conditions are with the boat as to its seaworthieness. I don't know what's acceptable to sail with, what I really need to check into, that sort of thing. My old man thinks it's ready to go..I'm still waiting on title issues..but I just want to make sure my first experience isn't a bad one.

If you don't already have an assembly manual, then go here and download one: http://www.hobiecat.com/support/index.html

Click on "Sailboats" and scroll down to the model boat you own.

This forum is overflowing with tips and wisdom, but this is not the best place when starting from nothing. It's best to have someone teach you some basics while on the boat before coming here, because you're more likely to get a quick answer to a specific question than an oblique one.

This is some good reading if you haven't read it yet. Definitely a good starting point. There are also some guides in there on how your boat should be set up.
