a couple of weeks ago i snapped my hiking stick in two. and it kinda looked like i may be done sailing for the year as a new one is not really in the budget at $70-$150. then while rummageing thru a closet at work i found it.... it being a teloscoping paint roller stick. with very little modifacation it will work just as well (i believe). now here is the kicker. i went to the local home store and found a 5' - 9' stick for a whopping cost of..... $6.97. in fact they had a huge rack of them in asorted sizes and models all less than $30. am i wrong for useing this on my hobie 18????? ... paul

It will break at the worst time. I wouldn't trust steering my boat with a paint stick. Repair the one you broke! Check catsailor.com for info on repairing.

Go ahead and use it until you can afford a new hiking stick. There's nothing wrong with sailing ghetto.

Just be advised that the definition of sailboat: "A hole in the water to dump money into" is being challenged here. I won't tell if you don't...oh you already have.

If you are worried about the cheap stick breaking, buy two of them. It is still less than one new hiking stick.

I couldn't afford to fix a hole in my boat so I sailed for a few months with duct tape covering it to keep the water out of the hulls. The hole was 6" in diameter. I may have not measured correctly when I went to cut the hole for my hull port. I waited until that winter to get it repaired. It wasn't pretty, but it worked.

On my Hobie 14 I used a painter stick for an entire summer, then I bought a hot stick.

I never had a problem with the stick at all. I now use it to paint with.

Looks like your saving for a new boat. :D

Nothing wrong with that.

Hey, you are only limited by your imagination I say. I bought a new used 16 in April and it had a paint stick for a tiller extension, I laughed at first sight ot it but lemme tell ya it's still holding strong and works just fine!

When I bought my first 16 I used a piece of ABS???, (the gray stuff) electrical conduit for the first year. Stuck a grip from a motorcycle on the end. Worked well enough.

NO PROBLEM Just Protest them. One Design or Portsmouth the boat rating will be rated for compliance to class rules. Protesting it would be something I would never do unless it was to speed up a boat.

A paint stick tiller extension is perfectly legal provided it is made from non-conductive material.
ie. No carbon fiber or metal paint sticks. Wood or plastic is ok.

11.1 The tiller extension may be either an extendable or non-extendable design but shall be a single tiller with one end connected to the crossbar in the same location as the factory supplied tiller. THE TILLER EXTENSION SHALL BE MADE OF A NONELECTRICAL CONDUCTIVE MATERIAL ON ALL NORTH AMERICAN REGION BOATS. NONELECTRICAL CONDUCTIVE TILLER EXTENSIONS ARE RECOMMENDED ON ALL BOATS WORLDWIDE
