I wonder if the US has Randy on retainer. If they don't, maybe they should

Wow, this is huge!! Out of the Olympics, into the America's Cup.
Catamarans.... sailboats of choice among billionaires world wide.

Multihull racing in the America's Cup is so much more prestigious than sailing in the Olympics. Just like bicycle racing - The Tour de France vs. the Olympics. It's No Contest! Just like Tennis - Wimbleton vs. the Olympics. Again, No Contest!
The Olympics is big in Track & Swimming, but not much else.
Catamarans racing in The America's Cup is HUGE!!!
Large multihulls racing in the America's Cup is going to be very exciting!
Monohulls racing in the Olympics - Boring!

The current "intelligence" actually has Team Oracle using a Trimaran, not a cat - still a multi and not a lead-sled though!

As for the racing being exciting, I doubt it. While it will be cool to watch, it won't be very tactical or particularly close. It's best 2 out of 3 races, 1st and 3rd upwind/downwind one-lap courses and the 2nd a triangular, one lap. All legs are very long (miles) and will be in open ocean. With the issues they will have tacking 90-ft wide boats, expect one tack upwind, one gybe downwind. It will be very, very fast but with the speed, the long legs, and the likely widely-different boat designs, it probably won't be close racing - one will get way, way ahead and unless they blow something big (can you imagine a 90-ft pitchpole!?) that'll be the race.

I think you might be pleasantly surprised. Particularly for a non-sailor, watching monoslugs on TV is like watching glue dry most of the time. Watching a big tri or cat fly a hull through big seas is video at it's finest. I think they are taking a page from the formula 40's and the excitement they have demonstrated to the public. The likelihood for wreckage is much greater at multihull speeds and that's what the non-sailors like to see... Drama.
