Hello all. I live in Vegas and I have been on Lake Mead lots of times. I have also been up and down the river from Hoover Dam to Willow Beach area. At the end of summer I want to plan a trip from Hoover Dam to Parker Dam. My goal is to do the whole river from Hoover to Yuma AZ. I just can't take that much time off right now. So I think I will do the first leg from Hoover to Parker Dam. I can drop in right at Hoover Dam (for a small Park Service Fee). From there it is 11 miles to Willow Beach, 31 miles to Cottonwood Cove and Marina, than 32 miles to Davis Dam ad Laughlin NV. Total first leg is 63 miles. At Laughlin there is a Kayak Outfitter that can pick us up and take us around the dam to the river side in front of the Casinos. From Davis it is 81 miles to Parker Dam for a grand total of 144 miles.

There are lots of options here. This trip can be a fast trip or it can be done over a week. I am think about taking my time and camping one night on the beach in between Hoover and Davis. Than maybe spend the night in a Casino in Laughlin before heading out again to Parker. From Davis to Parker spend a night or two on the beach. There are lots of Marinas along the way where you can resupply. That way you don't have to cary too much with you. Also the wives can stay at the Casino during the trip if that is needed. I would like to start this first leg around September or first of October. The weather is good that time of year not too hot or cold and the thunderstorms have already passed. There will still be long daylight hours.

There is a lot of history along the Colorado and there will be lots to see. Fishing our way down would be great as well. Lots of places to explore and lots of nature to see and photograph. I was planning on doing this trip solo but the wife suggested against it for safety reasons. There are no other AI's in Vegas and I could do it with normal Kayakers but I think it would be fun with fellow AI sailors. Let me know if any one is interested and we can start planning. It will be an adventure for sure.

Than in the spring ( April/May) I will do from Parker to Yuma.

Hi Don,

May be a little bit late for your Hoover dam to Davis Dam trip, but your planned trip sounds like just what I'm after!

I did Hoover Dam to Willow Beach last Thanksgiving ('08) w/2 nights at AZ Hotsprings in a Perception Napali and had a GREAT time! Was crowded at the hot springs, but had a great buffet dinner for Thanksgiving at the Casino/Hotel before putting in below the dam. Would like to retrace that trip and just keep going!

Not much need (or use) for a sail in Black Canyon, but that won't stop me and it does start to open up after the Catwalks.

If you got round to it, let me know how yours came out and what to watch for, otherwise I'll start getting ready for the spring leg.

Would also like to check into the viability of doing Bullfrog to Wahweap on Lake Powell and Peach Springs to LV Bay/Boulder City. I'll post more on that as I find out more! 8)

Those sound like good trips. I'm definitely interested in Bullfrog to Wahweap on Lake Powell next summer.

Keep posting your plans.

Hi Keith,

If you're willing to haul your AI all the way to Utah, I will do the planning!

It should be a great trip and I should still have some support in Page I can tap on (hope). Shuttle car, pick up, that sort of thing. I would want to make a several day trip out of it w/camping in spots along the shoreline I know of. Though it has literally been decades since I was there last. Be advised, IIRC there are many miles in the upper reaches or Glen Canyon where the canyon walls will preclude good winds. That may be a good thing as the winds can also get severe across all of the Colorado Plateau! 30-50mph would shut us out of Wahweap Bay due to waves! I'll have to coordinate the trip with the "windy season" in mind.

I know there's a member here that has done a side canyon of Lake Powell and will be seeking other input as well. I personally would not feel compelled to bring water and plan on filtering most if not all water.

Anyway, this is still very preliminary for me, but I will be posting on it!

SedonaAI,

My wife and I leave FL and head to northern NM at least part of the summer. We are actually thinking of 4-5 months out there next year. We were up in Yellowstone this summer--you can see a short picture story of part of that trip at http://www.hobiecat.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=70&t=11892 Scroll down until you begin to see the pictures. We were not using an AI, but bringing my AI out there is not a big problem.

When I said something about doing that Lake Powell trip in the next summer, that would probably be too hot. A trip in the Fall, Sept-Oct, would be better. The only thing I worry about would be the winds as we were traveling up river--you would definitely want following winds, at least, not headwinds. What is the situation, prevaling winds, in Sep-Oct?

Keith

Keith,

Summer or Fall might be best after checking out the Lake Powell Boat Launch webcams this morn:

http://webcams.water-data.com/powell/

Brrr...

Will find out more on prevailing winds and update later. Just to let you know, my current agenda is Bullfrog down river to Wahweap marina.

Brakeman,

Get back to me on the Hoover to Yuma trip. I'm still up for that! Also, planning Hoover to Willow beach again for early April!

Yo Brakeman... anybody?

After spending Thursday night at the Hacienda Hotel, I will be putting in with my boats at the base of Hoover Dam at 8:00AM the morning of Friday, 4-2 and hauling out ~11 miles later at Willow Beach, AZ on the morning/afternoon of Sunday, 4-4 w/two nights at AZ Hotsprings.

I am using Boulder City Outfitters to pass the security check point to the launch point, at the base of the Dam.

Details:

Boulder City Outfitters
702-293-1190 Bill
http://bouldercityoutfitters.com/

The launch permit is $15/ea
The shuttle fee is $30/ea
And the vehicle shuttle fee is $50/ea.
Kayak rentals available.

Hacienda Hotel
(800) 245-6380
http://www.haciendaonline.com/

Doubles at ~$27.50/night

You will need your ID to get past the security check point below the dam, so bring that on the river.

For the extra $20, I am having our vehicals shuttled down to Willow Beach rather than shuttling back to the start at Hacienda Hotel/casino and dealing with the "Dam traffic", a return shuttle of 2-3 hrs!

A good overview of what to expect on this run:

http://www.chucksweb.net/Trips/2005/Kay ... kFeb05.htm

Just found that one while doing some research.

I've done this trip before and it's very easy past the fast water at the base of the dam. You will need to make all your own arrangements with the outfitter. There should be plenty of tent space at the Hotsprings. I will have one guest in my party. You are all welcome to tag along!

Here is a link to a video I made from my trip to Lake Mead
Spent 6 weeks there and I toured the entire lake all Arms and Basins
The best part was Black Canyon from Hoover Dam to Willow Beach.
I recommend this easy 4 hr. Float down a lazy river.

Hey,

It has been a long time since I was here. I was on this forum as Brakeman but for some reasson I can not get back signed on under that name. Sometimes life gets in the way of the fun and I have not been able to sail for quite some time. I am back on the water now and determined to make the trip from Hoover to Yuma. I am doing it in sections. I think I will do the Hoover to Davis Dam this September. If anyone is interested let me know. Also here is a video from Paker Az this past weekend.

RS702, Glad you're back! I was trying to plan Davis Dam to Parker Dam for this coming Labor Day weekend; I have been using this as my primary source:

http://www.dbw.ca.gov/Pubs/DavistoParke ... Parker.pdf

Was planning to put in at Sportsman's Park (map 1, site 1) just below Davis Dam and pull out at either Lake Havasu Marina (map 4, site 5) or "plan B", continue all the way down to Davis Dam and pull out at Take Off Point (map 5, site 6) depending on the time left.

I would really like to spend at least three nights on the river, w/one at the white sand dunes. I am having trouble coordinating shuttles, though I think I have found a driver to bring down my truck from Laughlin to Havasu. Get back to me if you have any insight or interest on this leg of the trip to Yuma.

Also, have opened contact w/a new hobie dealer in Yuma that may be helpful on that end of it! From the Hobie "Find a Dealer" utility:

SedonaAI,

I am very interested in doing this trip soon. The place where you want to put in is good. I would like to go all the way to Havasu Springs if possible. I am down there just about every weekend. I have stayed at the resort at Havasu Springs and at Emerald Cove on the River at Parker. Three nights on the river sound good. Do you have Google Earth on your computer. Send me an email and I will send you a track that I made for the trip. Did you do the section from Hoover to Davis yet? I will be down there again this weekend and will send you some more video and pictures.

Don, good to see you sailing in that area this time of year. We are headed to Lake Havasu this next weekend. I mostly have to work but am taking the AI down there and was a little concerned about how hot it is (Friday is supposed to get up to 117 F  ).

FYI, I'm planning on launching at Rotary park at Lake Havasu and doing some small "few hour" trips in that area. Very early morning by myself, later in the day with the family. One excursion would be to go from Rotary Park to the SARA park area - looks like its a few miles to the South. Another to go around the island, explore the main bay a little. I don't have the wheels yet but seems another good thing to do would be to launch at Castle Rock (just North of the city) and explore that area a little.

The heat will be a new little adventure in itself for us...
