Hobie Cat’s Mirage Outback Fisherman once again produces big fish off the coast of Southern California. If it wasn’t for the speed and agility of the MirageDrive System there would have been absolutely no way that I would have been able to reach this fish. I had been dropping iron for quite some time and I was about to call it a day, when out of the corner of my eye about a ¼ mile away I had caught a glimpse of breezing yellows feeding on squid that they had pushed up from the deep. The MirageDrive had enabled me make a stealth approach while keeping my hands free to make my initial cast with a scrambled-egg surface iron, all of which would have been extremely difficult (if not impossible) on a traditional paddle yak. Right off the bat I was immediately hooked-up on my first cast! Ten minutes later with what felt like the fish of a lifetime towing me around the pacific, I had finally landed this fine specimen weighing in at a little over 28lbs.

VConsole... Nice Yeller!! And on iron, not live bait. How's your Outback handle the surf for you?

When I’m on the hunt for Yellows I generally always soak bait, yet unless I’m trolling, I try to stay as productive as possible. As the water cools here in San Diego the majority of the fish head south of the border, while only the “home-guards” stick around. Generally these fish hold tight to structure in deeper water, and that is where the iron comes into play. Though, at times these fish will surface, and that’s when being prepared and well equipped comes into play. Generally in the fall I will fish with four rods, each rigged for versatility, and random like conditions such as these.

As far as handling…it’s incredible! It does lack a little rocker in the front for punching through waves, but if you utilize the MirageDrive you’ll have more than enough power to get you through most situations. While launching in surf I keep the rudder up and use my paddle along with the MirageDrive to get me out past the breakers. As a wave approaches all you need to do is pedal! Unless you’re taking waves that are over your head the MirageDrive has more than enough torque to get you where you need to go. On re-entry, again I utilize my paddle for steering and control, and the MirageDrive for momentum.
