I have a new comptip and a used one that I managed to get out of a bent mast. The new one is about 6 inches longer than the used one and the part that fits into the mast is longer, too. Does anyone know when and why they were changed??

CompTip lengths on the 16?

The original retrofit (1985) was a little shorter. The idea was for easier retrofitting, but that was quickly canceled. The original ones had the mast cut off about a foot higher than the shroud tang. They did not require removing the tang. They installed with sealant and a screw / bolt. They were wobbly and different from production. Within a very short time the retrofits became what they are now.

They are both 16 comptips. That sounds right because the used one I have came off of an '80s boat. I guess that's just another piece of Hobie trivia to store away!!

Thanks Matt!

Matt,

I recently purchased a 1974 H-16 with the original mast. Is the factory offer for a reduced price for comptips still available?

Unfortunately, the Coleman Company (Owners of Hobie Cat during the change over) canceled the program after about 15 years of free retrofits. We offer the tips at a reduced price now for retrofits. See your dealer to order one. Be sure to let them know it is for a first time retrofit.
