that's funny, the boat you describe sounds like one I sold last year. anyway, It's pretty simple to just take the whole forestay wire off with the jib each time if it's stored outside. You can simply detach it at the mast tang. I've also seen a pretty neat invention: a snorkel sown into the jib, so that when it's furled only the UV resistant material is exposed to the sun. Pretty neat if you ask me. Just a thought, but I believe if you sow the material about 4-6 inches wide along the outside furled side of the jib, this will work.
