Noticed that the nuts on the bottom of the turnbuckle were midway on the threaded shaft which did not look right to me. Can anyone check theirs and let me know if the nuts should be up against the turnbuckle or all the way down against the v-frame base?

Also noticed that the rear aka has 2 pegs on the curved part of the arm. The ama bungis on the lower one. Is the upper one Hobie thinking ahead in case the bungi cord stretches so there is a tighter connection between the aka and ama? Just like to know what everything is for.

Fyi if it helps anyone - I noticed that the rear pulley system that is attached the lower right side of the kayak with 3 bolts has one bolt below the waterline. I took the bolts out and added a rubber washer to the lower 2 as I noticed that a small amount of water was getting in there.

The nuts should be up tight to the turnbuckle. It's the "lock" nut to stop it from turning. If you think it turned, you can adjust it so the mast reefing spool doesn't contact the hull. I try to keep the space as small as possible, without touching, so the reefing line can't easily slide under the spool.

My turnbuckle nuts were both loose until I had the dealer tighten them correctly. I didn't realize they had upper nuts as well, as they are up out of sight under the deck. Once tightened correctly, they haven't come loose again.

It sounds like it should be added to the preflight checklist. Especially items around the mast area where there's a lot of stresses. From previous posts, if you tighten them correctly, they should never come loose. But for added assurances, I'm thinking of adding a few drops of "green" Loctite.

marjim, it's in the Hobie Island Checklist, see "V-Frame turnbuckles loose".

cliffs2yak, I've been wondering if we should have a separate "Preflight" checklist though. Kayaking Bob has posted his checklist, which is quite thorough, as he tends to push his Islands pretty much "to the max". We could ask Bob to post a new thread on his presail checklist, and 'bump' it occasionally so members will find it, or I could add it as a separate table to my Checklist webpage.

Any thoughts? Bob?

Only one nut found on my 2007 AI brace. The bottom one.

Howzit Cliffs -What's the green version? Usually Blue or Red is recommended.

Nohuhu,

The green Loctite is the less viscous version of Loctite which is designed to seep into the treads without requiring disassembly. My locking nuts on my turnbuckles seem pretty tight after a few outings and don't want to mess with it very much at the moment. And so I'm opting to use the green Loctite for some quick and easy assurances. Eventually I'll have to do a maintenance breakdown and will disassemble, clean, and use some blue Loctite.

Maybe a dumb question.... Do Hobie Loctite at the factory???

If not why not?...surely they should do this...I see lots of issues with loose bolts and I am waiting for delivery of mine.

If it is such a problem then I will take every screw out and loctite it if it has not been done at the factory. I don't want any surprises out off shore. Had enough of those already to last me a lifetime!
