I am in the process of buying a Wave from an individual and was wondering what to look for. What do experienced Wave owners suggest I look for when inspecting the boat? Are there any typical problems with a used Wave that I should be looking for? Also, any recommendations on who to buy a new/used trailer from in the Oregon/Washington area would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi Torlef, good to see someone else in the area! If you are interested, the local fleet and our division have some fun sails coming up to start the season and we'd always love more people!

As for things to look for in the Wave, I can just give a few general hints:

Look for loose connections and cracks where the shrouds and bridle attach to the hull.

Check the shrouds and halyard for fraying or broken wires (but don't run your hand along the wire to check, ouch!).

If it is disassembled, have the seller assemble it to make sure everything is there.

Look for tears or stains in the sail - stains don't ruin your fun but you could probably talk them down in price for it.

Don't worry too much about the hull stickers peeling - many people just remove them anyway as they have a habit of coming halfway off, sticking to sand, and dragging in the water.

As for trailers, Craigslist is a great place for used trailers - check the Portland, Seattle, and Eugene Craiglists. Does anyone more familiar with Waves know if they will fit to a Hobie 14 trailer with some adjustment?

Again, let me know if you'd be interested in getting together for some fun sails or races.

Well, I found a trailer and picked up my '02 Wave today. Everything looks good as far as I can tell and am looking forward to some warmer weather so I can get it on the water. Seeing as I have never even sailed a catamaran before, much less this one, I am very excited to try it out. TJP, thanks for the good tips and please tell me more about the local scene. I looked to private message you, but was unable to figure out how to get it done.

I think PM's are disabled on this board.

Gimme an email though:

tim dot post at comcast dot net

Replace dots and ats of course.

Our first fun sail is April 15th up at Lake Washington - I have a feeling it's going to be a "wetsuit but try not to get wet" kind of day. We also have a Hobie 101 coming up which is a half-classroom, half sailing class. I'll email you the info when I get your address. But, if we have a decent day with a bit of wind, we could always hit Lacamas Lake too :)

Hey Im in Seattle and wondering if there are many people sailing Waves down there in Vancouver? I'd come down for the 15th if there were others.
As far as Buying a Wave I have purchaced two used waves at different times. I leave one at lake Chelan and I keep one here in Seattle but things I like are cup holders on the classic (I'll suffer with the saggy tramp) and back rest a absolute must I have them on both. I also have a jib (not that great but works down wind), a spinaker pretty fun really and a hooter a blast but cost alot. I think any of this stuff on a Wave makes it more interesting but not a neccesity except for the back rest. The hulls seam to be pretty indistructable although I heard of one that got to hot and the tie down saged one of the hulls so watch out for that.
Thanks Mark

Hey Mark,

Actually, the sail on the 15th is in Seattle, on Lake Washington. Give me an email at the address above and I'll send you more info.

As for number of Waves, I have no idea. The Wave really isn't a racing boat, but it sure is fun. I got to mess around on one at the Skamokawa race last year on the lower Columbia River and it was a blast! I'd say show up and see how many other Waves you can get going.

Mark:

tim dot post at comcast dot net

Replace dots and at with . and @ (can't post the "real" address because forum bots will send me tons of spam).

The sail on the 15th is out of Stan Sayer Pits which is a park south of Sandpoint. The full schedule is up at the website www.div4.hobieclass.com

The full schedule book with Notice of Race, times, and directions should be out soon.
