It's not totally clear to me, but did you paint your rudder assembly flat black?

Yes I painted the castings flat black. It was easier for me just to paint them than have them powder coated or anodized. The type of paint that I am using is the same stuff that you would paint a grill or headers with. Got it from Ace Hardware. Its kind of hard to mess up a flat black paint job

Anywho be ready cause I will start covering the rails next!

I work at an archery shop here in Dothan, AL. Really nice place and great people to work with. Archery is another of my past times and also my work. I am the traditional guy at the shop and build my on bows. I have been building longbows for about 4 years.

If ya ever in Dothan stop by Sportsman Outfitters and say hi!!

Joshua

By the way that is my crazy look there. I am not like that all the time................................................or am I

That gives me hope for my winter project this year. I have osmosis blisters along with all the other delamination and hull damage from being drug onto a floating dock. I have a lot of work ahead of me but you gave me hope and focus. These boats are fixable, and always worth it...

Thanks for the invite. You never know, I lived in Anniston once and still have friends there, and I have family in Destin, so, who knows who might be showing up for supper!

I got the rails covered and put the boat back on the trailer. Glad to get it off the ground. Just waiting to get the tramp now.

Be back with more.........................................

Got the other Hobie Cat logo yesterday and put it on this morning. I think she looks sweet!!! 8) I also put some anti-skid on toward the back of the hulls, just in case I need to go further aft on the trap!!

Hey this is really looking sweet - Good for you!

I've thought about adding graphics but I need to recondition my hulls first. Oxidation, shiny, original color stripe where I removed the original faded and peeling graphics stripe, but nothing major.

I'd jump right into graphics like yours but all I can think of is the next buffing/cutting job I'll do. Won't that toast the stick-ons? Is it simply a matter of eating the cost and task of adding new graphics every couple of years?

Your boat looks AMAZING! Im thinking ill be doing the same job on my Robin Egg Blue H18 next spring. Question, What kind of paint did you use? Sorry if i missed in while reading. I think ill probably try and match my paint color pretty close to the original color so that when it gets beached it wont be as obvious where the paint has scratched off. As far as the mast goes, how has the paint held up? Does anyone know if there is like a "invisible shield" or "clear bra" material that you can use on the bottom of your hulls for protection. Thanks! and CONGRATS! :)

Joshua,
This boat looks awesome. I'm in the beginning stages of restoring a '73 and was thinking the same lines as you, bright white gel coat and flat black everything else. I am thinking of using variprime on the aluminum first as it is a self etching primer and should hold on tight. Then I was going to shoot it with "hot rod" black which is an automotive flat black used in the rat rodder world.

Your boat really gave me a great vision of what mine can be in a few months.

Thanks for sharing your project!

Fantastic job. A real motivator.

I am doing some repairs on my '76 H16 right now and might just go ahead and do a real restoation.

Keep those pics coming.

BTW has there been any problems or adverse comments about using Bondo on the hulls. I have gotten the impression that it is not recommented.

Ed

Well I am back and have been doing some more work on the boat. Well here she is with the sails on her. Still got to get a tramp though. No battens in the main so it looks floppy. So close now. :)

More to come and glad to be back,
