I'm looking into buying a H17sport with wings, and a jib. Looking for something that I can single had, and take the wife and kids out on and still enjoy the ride. I read that the 17 is a bit of a submarine if your taking about shipping any about of weight. I like the lines of the 17 and was hoping that the sport was more buoyant, and a better craft for a family situation..

Look for a H18 with wings. It is similar to the H17 but on steroids.

17 and 17 Sport are the same boat. Sport has a jib and is boomless.

The 17 makes a far better boat for single handed sailing, so the decision is... how often single handed and how heavy is the wife and kid? You certainly can sail with 2-3 on the 17 if not to heavy.

Sounds like a Getaway or H18, each have wing options.

Yeah... even 250 is up there for the 17. Best at 185-200 lbs I think... then maybe a skinny crew at times.

As fastcat mentioned... A Getaway is also a good option. Easier when single handed because no daggerboards and durable rotomolded hulls means handling on the beach is less critical.

I'm 230 pounds and that is pushing it on the 17. My 16 would handle myself and my 150 pound son. The raised tramp on the 16 helps keep you out of the water even when piddling on a light day. In fact three on the 16 is no biggie. My 18 was great for the extra weight. Especially when the wind blows hard. Now that my son is older I wish I still had the 18. The 17 is still a blast single handing.

Been looking at the getaway, and the only problem that I have with that is the pointing problem? THe 21 SC is to large.. I'll floating it myself, and don't need the kids helping.. ( to young) so look like the getaway is it ....
