Hello All,

My wife and I are proud owners of a 2009 Oasis and I am contemplating trading it in on a new TI. What I was wondering is has anyone done any trips where you circumnavigated an island; or perhaps just a trip across some open water to an island? I just wonder realistically what these boats capable of. We really enjoy the Oasis but feel a bit limited as far as an adventure goes. So any stories photos or plans to get out there would be great to read.

Thanks and Fair winds to all :D
Paul

Here's a trip that I'm taking this weekend. I'm using an AI, not a TI, but I think you'll find some of what you're looking for.

(sorry about the highlighted word "trip". I used that in my search of the forums to find the post.)

Last year, a group of us sailed about 14 miles (each way) to Broughton Island, off the East coast of Australia. The seas were pretty turbulent and the AI's handled them well. Here's Stringy's video from the trip:

About 4 yrs ago, I asked a similar question on a thread entitled "Have you done any "expedition" trips on an AI." The TI was not in production for another 3 yrs. I've continued that thread with stories of various camping trips. The wildest weather occurred on a trip last March--page 12 of that thread. Augag,

that sounds like an epic trip. exactly what I would like to do some day. I guess we could do it now but the AI sounds like it would make a lot less work of it. You guys have a great time and hope you see some Moose.

Chris,
Great video! Looks like you took some pretty big splashes to the face but the boat seemed to enjoy the ride. Guess I will live vicariously through these treads until I can raise the funds to procure our TI.
Thanks and keep on living the dream!

Keith,

Thanks I had to read whole thread. Those are great stories, really gets the winds in my mind blowing. The storm stories are really a testament to the capabilities of the Adventure Islands. I know you would never intentionally go out in winds like that but it’s nice to know the boats held up in what sounds like the most extreme conditions I have read about. I really enjoyed reading and taking it all in.
Have a great one
Paul

Anyone else have plans or accounts of journeys? I would really enjoy hearing about them.

Paul,
We started out with an Oasis and did some great trips on it, however if you want to cover long distances on open water or offshore then the AI/TI is definitely the way to go. They can handle, pretty much, any conditions.
When we first got our Oasis we took it up to the Great Barrier Reef and threw it on the back of the ferry for a trip to Lady Musgrave Island. viewtopic.php?f=11&t=8333.
It was great for exploring the lagoon but with a TI you could explore the surrounding islands as well!
We have just returned from a 4 day camping trip in our TI. We were able to explore places only a kayak could get to and because we could sail as well were able to go further and with less effort than in a kayak. Our return trip was done in 25-30 knot following winds on open water and we just sat back and enjoyed the 27 km ride!
The simplicity of the Oasis is hard to beat. With the TI comes much greater weight and complexity but these negatives are far outweighed by the benefits and versatility of a sailing trimaran that can easily be converted back to a kayak when needed. :)

Stringy,

Thanks for the link that looked so wonderful. It must be nice to live so close to a natural wonder. Perhaps we will get a bit more adventurous with our Oasis, however after reading all the links to different threads I do think the TI would be worth any extra weight or time for set up. Do you still car top your TI like the Oasis or have you opted to pull a trailer?

This is not an adventure of the type most are looking for, but for 2 hours we played with these guys. Any one on the beach would have thought I had lost my mind, sailing in circles and figure eights. Sure was fun in Tampa Bay...

GR82Sail :
We also started out with an Oasis back in 2007, we traded it in at the Hobie dealer for a TI about a year ago and are really happy with the decision. We sail mostly in the Tampa bay area and Key West. We are Scuba divers and have taken our TI many times with full scuba gear (tanks, BC's, and coolers, etc). Many of the coral reefs are 5-6 miles off shore and we go diving and island hopping all the time. We are out every weekend (year round) with our TI doing new adventures all the time. During crab season we look like the guys on the deadliest catch with crab traps stacked on the trampolines going out to sea. We have over 800 miles on the TI to date and it's still going strong. As far as distance goes, I've sailed from Sarasota FL up to Egmont key or Ft Desoto (where watertribe EC challenge launches from) 5 or 6 times now (35-40 mile round trip). We often launch from Key West and sail out to the Mule keys, (Cottrell key is about 15 mile west of Key west). We do have an emergency gas motor on the boat and always carry about 40 miles of fuel on board just in case, but have only needed the motor a couple times ( ie.. broken rudder, loss of wind, etc). In my opinion the TI is the most versatile boat out there today. Have fun
Bob

Paul,
I car topped the Oasis for 2 years but got tired of that and got a trailer for it. I trailer the TI but would consider car topping it if necessary such as driving down a sandy 4WD only track. I have the Hobie cradles which could be mounted on roof racks. I would add a front off bullbar and rear support off towbar as well. There are a few who car top their TI's on the forum.
