DIY Hobie Wave Motor Mount
I really enjoy sailing my wave. However, there are those times when I'm several miles away from the boat ramp and the wind suddenly dies. It is no fun being dead in the water during those Texas summers!
I checked out Torqeedos. They are fabulous, but I was not ready to shell out $1700 for an occasional-use motor!
There is a great motor mount available, but it costs around $400. So, I decided to build one myself. The motor mount cost me about 25 bucks. I got a Minn Kota Endura 36 lb thrust trolling motor on Craigs List for $65. The Werker 33 amp deep cycle, sealed battery was about $70.
On high speed (5), the motor pushes the boat at 4 - 4.25 mph, and it will run for about one hour+. It beats sitting still hoping the wind will pick up. A larger battery would increase running time significantly.
The motor mount is not designed for a gas outboard, but it handles the trolling motor without any problems. Also, it allows me to tuck away the motor under the trampoline. The wave has no traveler, but since the motor mount is attached under the cross bar, it might also work on a Hobie 14 or 16.
I uploaded a video to youtube.com explaining the whole process. If you would like to check out the video, search for "Hobie Wave Motor Mount".
There are so many Hobie videos, so be sure to use the quotation marks.

how much is the hobie motor mount new? I am buying a used hobie with the motor mount on it in a week that comes with the trolling motor and battery. I would be interested in selling all of it if someone is interested.
