My how time flys  :o
Guess it stands still for nobody

Stringy - how did you transport those 2 beach shelter tents to Murray's beach??
They are too long to store below, so I guess you must have carried them in the rear cargo area. Did you have them waterproofed - if so how?

G'Day Mickey,
The beach shelter folded is about 1m long so it fitted in the front hatch easily.
Being all nylon it doesn't need waterproofing.
It's a speed shelter and it works like an umbrella so it's simple to put up- unfold the hinged poles, pull a cord and it all snaps into place. We got them from Rays Outdoors:

G'day Stringy

Thanks for reply. I have a similar one I got from Aldi. I'll have to take a closer look at it and see why I couldn't fit it in the front hatch of the AI.
Just got back from a 3 day AI camping trip on Gippsland Lakes with 3 local mates. Weather was superb and we all had a great time sailing, pedalling and socialising.
I know you are a great fan of the tramps but I had a few issues with them.
It was the first time I had ever used full size tramps.
The first thing I found was that it was awkward to get on and off with them open.
I did not feel confident that they wouldn't cause the boat to capsize in moderate to strong winds.
If you don't already have them rolled up before encountering strong winds, what do you do?

When I rolled them up, I found there was unable to secure my paddle in the normal place - so I attached it to the side of the hull using the original Adventure kayak bungey.
Not long after this, we experienced 17 kt winds on a reach. It wasn't long before I heard a noise like something broke! I looked at my paddle and discovered that the forward blade had broken off as a result of the pressure of the water on it!

I certainly enjoyed having the space to put things on - as well as the added sense of security.
However the difficulty of boarding, not being able to use your paddle, and extra complications
caused when landing at a jetty were a real pain in the......

My mate Gerry has cut his in two and made half tramps. They make a lot more sense to me.

I would be interested in your thoughts/experiences on this also.

All the best.

Cheers

Bad luck about the paddle Mickey. :(
As you've discovered there are some negatives with the tramps. The worst as far as I'm concerned is not being able to use the paddle when needed. If you remember at JB I tested rowing the AI out using the rowlocks I added forward of the gear pockets. It was possible to row with the paddle halved and under the tramps -though I wouldn't want to travel too far rowing it. Others reported sitting in the cargo well and paddling to be OK.
I actually found it easier to get in by sitting on the tramp and pivoting/swinging over into the seat. Jason found it easier using this method as well.
As far as rolling them up on the water I have done it by unclipping the tramp then collapsing the aka to bring it closer.
I have yet to capsize it with the tramps. I like to lean/hike out when I can and I always throw some tethered drybags/gear out onto the windward tramp. I make sure the tramp is tightened properly so it catches less wind. In strong winds I furl the sail when the lee ama begins to submerge.
I reckon the positives outweigh the negatives but tramps on the AI aren't for everybody, however on the TI they are essential for getting the most out of the boat IMHO. :)

Stringy
Thanks for your thoughts re the tramps.
Now that I am aware of the problem stowing the paddle with tramps rolled up, it won't be difficult to come up with a solution to that issue.
Are you still using your AI tramps on your TI, with the pool noodle to provide adequate tension?

Mickey,
After I sold the Oasis and second AI I went straight out and bought the TI tramps and cradles! :)

OK, I'll bite! Stringy, why were you carrying a spare Miragedrive? Inquisitive minds need to know :)

Tony,
Force of habit.
The V1 drives with turbo's were prone to breaking masts and cables. I think I broke 5 masts, 3 idler cables and a drive chain on our '06 Oasis so I got into the habit of carrying a spare drive. Hobie have improved the drive greatly and breaks like that are rare these days. The V2 drive has proven so reliable that I don't bother carrying a spare drive anymore, just a few parts. :)

Mickey - As I rarely use the map holders,I put my tramps on upside down ie: the right one goes on the left side upside down and visa versa. I did it by mistake once but then found that I could attach all sorts of stuff to the bungie loops, including paddle.

Stringy - Lucky you had that spare drive on the Broughton trip hey.

Thanks mate for reminding me!
I'd totally forgotten about that.
I should explain that a spare drive is also useful to cover operator error.
It came in handy after hitting a submerged rock just as you start out on a 20km open water return trip.
