drilling a hobie 18 deck delam

I have a mid 80's hobie 18 and I have a soft spot. I am going to get the Git Rot and use it. I am just worried about drilling too deep. I don't want to have to repair the inside of the hull. I saw someone mention drill stops. How can you figure out when to stop?

Does anyone know the depth?

Is it so obvious I can't miss?

I just don't want a swiss cheese h18.

You can feel when the drill goes through the top layer of glass and into the foam core. If I remember right I drilled holes about 3/16" to 1/4" deep.

When I drilled into my H16 last year to repair a delamination problem I used a moto tool with a small grinder - instead of a drill. It's smaller & lighter & I had a much better feel for drilling through foam until I hit the hard stuff. It was very easy.

When I repaired my H18 last year, I found it to be very easy to know when to stop. Don't push too hard on the drill. Just use the drills weight and it will stop in plenty of time. Almost immediatly after going through the top layer of glass the foam will be penetrated and the drill will stop on the second layer of glass. Just pull it back when this happends and you will be fine.
