I'm wondering if I couldn't just use neoprene socks instead of booties? Water temperatures around 40-50 F.

Sometimes I use both. The biggest problem with the neoprene socks that I have is that they wear through on the bottoms if you do anything with them. The boots are far more durable. I've used just the socks before, and been ok, but I've never once complained that my feet are too hot when I'm sailing in cold weather (water). So an extra layer isn't the worst thing that you could do.

Water temps in the 40's, I will definitely be in my 7mm neoprene booties. Keeping the extremities warm and toasty goes a long way towards maintaining overall comfort in cold weather.

I will be in my drysuit with the Gore-Tex booties (and capilene socks inside). There's nothing like having dry, warm feet to improve your disposition.
