This may be a odd question but I was wondering what most people do with the seat drain plugs while kayaking, open or closed?

Closed would prevent water from coming up and soaking your rear, however when open, when water washes over the side of the yak, I suppose that water would also drain when open which has it's benefits also.

What do you do when on the water, open or closed seat drain plugs?

Excellent question. I was kind of wondering a similar question. I've been in SOT kayaks and some of them have water coming up the seat scuppers and some don't. I've had my Revo 13 now for a few weeks and I have not put it in the water yet. The lakes are still pretty darn cold here. I'm about 195#. Does water typically creep up the seat scuppers on a Revo??? If not, I might as well launch it now and experience the Mirage Drive system for the first time here.

Depends on the conditions.

flat water good weather - closed.

Wet n wild - Open. Dry suit required.

An outfitter will bury its nose in the wake of a powerboat not on the plane and doing anything above dead slow. If you arch your back you can do a reverse cat flick and keep your bum dry while cursing at the power boat and scooping out the seat. :D

If the Hobie mirage came from the uk it would have a wave piercing bow and shed the water well before it reached the cockpit. The cupholders and cubbies would be closable lockers and the dodger would be standard.

I keep mine open. Actually, i screw them in one thread and leave them real loose. I do not get any water coming up and the water can get out. The first time I used my new Revo last year I went out with them closed and took some water over the side. Since I was in the Mangroves there was no place to get out and close them. I sat in a pool of water all day. Never again.

Same here, first thing off the hull. But I do sail in warm water.

I'm very much like Cosybike. I base my decision for the Oasis on the water conditions. I usually leave them in place but very loose if the water is kicking up. I really don't like sitting in a pool of water. On the other hand if things are calm why bother loosening them in the first place. I do leave them in place whether loose or tight as I'm afraid I'll loose them somewhere around my garage if I take them out totally. It would be at a time like that when I would find myself really wanting to have them in place.

I leave mine closed in the Outback and have been out in all sorts of conditions, never had water in the seat area yet. the day I do I guess I'll have to have a rethink.

On my Adventure I leave them pushed into the holes but not screwed in at all water can squish up into the seat area but at least it then tends to drain away.

On the Outback, which floats much higher, I often used to go out in dry land clothes as it was only on rough days that water would get over the gunwales & into the seat, but I still used to leave the plugs pushed in just to let water drain out should any land in my lap.

When I swapped the OB for the A I did try to design a seat plug with a one-way valve system based on a tiny floating ball like you find on the air end of kids' snorkels. While this seemed to work in theory I am not sure it made much practical difference and I just resorted to wearing swim shorts for warm water and neoprene shorts for cold water.
