It was on Amazon. I must have searched "Hobie 18 Performance Manual" there a hundred times, but for some reason "hobie 18" brought it up. stoked!

10 bucks. I probably would have paid a hundred.

I had heard that this thing had been out of print for years. Of course the publishing industry is completely different now then when it was taken out of print. Small lots are very affordable. Hopefully they'll do it again. Maybe even a Kindle edition.

In case anyone was wondering what this book is currently worth, I just (barely) lost a bidding war on ebay for a copy of the book at $87.56 plus shipping. Not bad for a book that originally sold for roughly 1/2 to 1/3 that price. First copy I've managed to find in 9 months. I suppose it's just as well, I went well over my original maximum but... you know... final 60 seconds...

An unfortunate side effect of current US copyright law is that once a publisher decides that they can't get any more profit out of a certain book and stop printing it, rather than pass into the public domain, that works remains locked up by the publisher for 96 years. (patents, by the way, are limited to 20 years.) This has the effect of completely killing a substantial number of works for future generations, by more or less making sure that they disappear off the face of the earth before another living soul is allowed any semblance of a chance to make a profit off of them. Thanks, Disney!

Haha, no, sorry, they've just been a very strong and powerful corporate lobbiest behind expanding copyright law and extending the limits, most recently in 1998. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonny_Bono ... ension_Act

I was just pointing out why it would not be legal to make photocopies for distribution, as was suggested earlier in this post. I would also note that the copyright most likely belongs to Wind Publishing Co, not Phil Berman.

I contacted the author Phill Berman, inquiring who owns the publishing rights to the Performance Manual, to see what the possibility of a short run reprint would be. Phil informed me that Murray's Marine owns the publishing rights to the book, as they originally funded the project, and suggested I contact Steve Murray about it.

I have already sent an email on the subject to his attention. Those H18 owners wishing to have a short run reprint of the manual done should do the same to show there's enough interest.

Being an 18 racer himself, I doubt Steve would need much much encouragement to reprint some books if enough people were looking to make it viable.
