I've been considering purchase of a Wave to get myself back into recreational sailing. I'm new to cat sailing and the Wave looks about ideal for not only my lack of experience, but also limited storage space. However, since there isn't much for protected waters and sailing in a small, crowded harbor just isn't going to cut it, I'm looking for something that I can take out into the open ocean and along the shore, within a couple of miles or so.

Typical coastal conditions (Orange County, CA coast) are 10-15 knot wind with 2-3ft windchop across 3-4ft groundswell. Is the Wave able to sail through this type of swell without bogging down or should it be sailed primarily in protected waters?

Dana Point? No problem. This small boat has plenty of floatation and will be a lot of fun outside Dana Point.

It will mostly be around Dana Point, but want to be able to make some runs up the coast to Newport and such. Venturing to Catalina island would be great but isn't a requirement.

I am sure I have seen some wave among the jetskiers off Doheney before. I thought they were rentals from in the harbor. We were coming in on Sum Fun (fishing boat) and saw a couple of them right by the jetty.
I was hoping to sail my 20 to Catalina next time I get out to Dana Point. You'll have to get your wave and we'll take off and head to Avalon. I should be able to get there and have the coast guard find you before dark!
