Even a good photo would give us the info as to the type of pin it was.

This has been my solution to the shroud anchor pin issue. I sailed with these pins for most of last year. I drew them up and had a shop machine them from 5/8" diameter 316 stainless rod. While 316 SS does not have as much strength as 17-4PH stainless, there is a lot more beef with these pins. Bending has not been an issue. The threaded section is 3/8"-16 which is the same diameter as the crossbar bolts, as opposed to 5/16"-18 thread which is what the Hobie pins are.

Those are super nice SRM! Will you be producing enough to offer for sale?

Thanks. Not sure about selling them at this point. There are some issues. First, I would have some concerns about the liability of selling a piece of standing rigging equipment. If there was a failure of any type, whether it was caused by this part or not, I don't want to be sued. Also, there is an issue with the twist toggle that goes between the anchor pin and the shroud adjuster. The width of the toggles vary and some are too narrow to fit on this pin. The best solution is likely to just remove the toggle all together, use a ten hole shroud adjuster, and make sure the anchor pin is oriented properly. Also the diameter of the hole in the hull needs to be increased very slightly to allow the larger diameter pin to fit. Neither of these are major issues, but you would need to know that the installation may not be as simple as unbolt the old pin and bolt on the new on.
Last is the issue of cost. Depending on volume, there is the possibility that I would have to sell these for considerably more than what the Hobie pins go for. If there was enough interest it may be feasible, but the cost of these two pins was pretty high.

If you're interested, you can contact me privately and maybe we can work something out.

In addtion to the pins take a look at the anchor reinforcement brackets. Rare problem but as long as you are looking at anchor pins look over the brackets.

At this years H18 National at Mohave one 18 experianced a hull failer. Upon closer inspection but not related to the failer it was noticed that 2 of the 6 reinforcement brackets were cracked.

Something else to keep in mind if you are racing, from the HCA rule book:

15.2 Shrouds and forestays shall connect to the
HOBIE CAT CO. supplied shroud adjusters. The
twist toggle shall not be removed and must be
used as supplied.

That being said, I would be interested in purchasing a pair as well.

As a matter of interest,...... What are the pupose of the twist toggles ??

I recently removed mine because the recently fitted rigging was slightly too long and I had to make it all fit.

I ask the "purpose" because the pins are able to rotate and fit the shroud adjusters with side stay.

In my book the twist toggle's use is illogical on the basis that the pin is able to rotatate.

They are the universal joint in the connection to assure an even load on the pin. Even if you rotate the pin, they seem to move on their own and the angle changes with mast rake etc.

Fyi... we have heard a story about, but have not received a claim or samples of a failed "current" anchor pin. Still waiting.

Old thread, but a note to anyone looking for a solution for Heavy Duty anchor pins for the Hobie 18. This week I picked up a set of Hobie Tiger/FX-1 pins (Hobie part no. F21026058). They are substantially “beefier” than the stock H18 pins. In fact they are very similar to the custom pins that I made several years ago (mentioned a few posts up) which are still going strong. I have been looking for an option to upgrade my second 18 without having to go custom again.

The Tiger pins are a larger thread size than the stock H18 pins 10mm (0.390” diameter) vs. 5/16” (0.313”). I had to drill out the hole in the deck to accept the larger diameter and install a new nut 10x1.5 (metric). Otherwise, they look good.

I have no idea how readily available these pins are in the US, but if you’re looking for a more bomb-proof option and can get your hands on a set, this may be the ticket.

The current pins are machined from solid rod and are 17-4... with rolled threads. Cutting threads is a failure mode due to chattering. The other was the heads. They used to pound them and that sometime caused cracks.

New ones are near bullet proof I would think.
