corrosion in pylon - first time poster -will my repair hold?

Greetings.
I have some corrosion in one pylon of my beloved hobie. Its a late 80's /early 90's model. My local dealer was wary of any form of any sort of welding repair to the pylon as he stated the heat generated would :
1.degrade the glue joint holding the pylon in place within the hull;
and
2.possibly damage the fibreglass
So I have glued 2mm(1/8") curved alum plate inside the pylon (on both sides) with West epoxy. I then glassed over the alum with thoroughly wetted out chopped strand mat. Over this I applied a coat of epoxy/fill mixture to ensure it is all waterproof. Prior to any glueing I degreased the pylon and alum patch, gave them an acid wash and then hit them with a wire brush.
I am happy with the result but I have been searching the web for advice on bonding alum to alum and it appears that quite a few seem to think it is not a permanent solution. The only way of bonding is to weld apparently.
What I can't figure out is why it appears to be satisfactory to glue the alum pylons to the boat with polyester resin when it is constructed - yet an epoxy glue will not hold.
In short - will my repair job work? ( I can attach photos once I figure out how to do so)
