I have the opportunity to purchase a 2003 Oasis and it only has 1 mirage drive with it. I have been reading this forum for awhile trying to get as much information as I can on the various drive updates, and I know there has been several. I am new to kayaking and will be using this on a lake in the Kansas City area. Question is, will any mirage drive unit fit any mirage kayak, or is it more complicated than that? I will be looking to obtain another drive an wanted to know what my options were. Thanks!

Any mirage drive will fit in any mirage drive kayak.

Not sure why you would want multiple drives though... ?!

Oaisis are tandem with 2 drives.

I think newer drives will work but have to remove the new added guide rod.

Thanks for the info! Is it worth getting a new drive for around $500 or find an older drive and update it with the V2 components. I found a guy that has an old drive, but wants $300 for it. Seems high to me, but there again I am new to these kayaks with mirage drive. Isn't the updates to convert a V1 to V2 around $125 or so, without any fin upgrades?

Why not get the old drive and just use it as is? They were not problematic. I have two of the older ones and they're still going strong and trouble free after years of use.

Is $300 about right for a V1 drive? Again, not up on values of these drives yet.

Sorry, I don't know what used drives normally sell for. If it's in extremely good condition I don't think that's necessarily out of line, but again, I don't know what the going price for used Mirage Drives is.

You can check completed auctions on Ebay to get a very rough idea what drives are worth. Seemed to be $200 to $300 last time I looked, but I imagine the majority are hot.

Drives do not come available very often, unless as state above they are hot. I would not buy sight unseen with the drive. FTF only. You might be stuck with a non-working drive but looks good in the pict. Good Luck and happy hunting for a drive.

my dealer in S Fla rents Hobies and sells used drives for around $300. good because you can try before you buy plus brings traffic into his store for possible later purchase of a yak.

have seen them on craigslist. found a guy selling one dirt cheap. he knew nothing about them and wanted to meet in a parking lot to conduct the transaction. hmmmm!

prices on ebay seem to drop during the off season. they do have their buyer guarantee, so offers some protection. what I've done is keep a constant watch of craigslist. sometimes someone needs cash fast, I bought a hobie with drive, kept the drive and sold the yak without. ended up paying about $100 for the drive. bit of a hassle and could get stuck unless you know the market. good luck!

I have not bought a, stand-alone, used drive but I did purchase 2 used Hobies (Oasis and Adventure).

The yaks were 2008 and 2006 models so they came with the V1 drives.
A cable snapped on our second outing and it cost $50 to replace. Additionally, we chose to upgrade to the ST fins and I upgraded each to V2 style ($100 per drive).

From my limited experience, I would pay the extra money first for a new V2 drive and second for a used V2 drive for the following reasons:
- Replacement parts cost more for a V1
- More torque is placed on the V1 due to the angle of the fitting
- V2 parts seem to be more readily available
- V2 is newer
-V2 masts are screw-in versus pressure locked
