We have a 2010 TI with the new rudder upgrade kit. Since we bought the boat we have had issues with the rudder control. These issues were greatly relieved with the upgrade kit. We are still having problems with the lines for the rudder getting tangled though. We keep untying the lines and then resetting them. The rudder seems to work alright for a little while, but it never fails that the lines are soon tangled again. Has this happened to anyone else? What were your solutions for keeping the lines separate?

We are sailing Lake Superior this week and had not yet named our boat. Yesterday we named it Fiddy, because we can only get it to work correctly about 50% of the time.

You may want to be sure that the lines from the steering handles are not wrapped around each other (mine were). Also, that the knots where the internal lines attach to the rudder lines should be offset enough from each other so they don't hit each other during normal steering.

Thank you. We just got done fixing all of the lines again. It was crossed where we couldn't see it just behind the center hatch. The up line pulley was also interfering with the steering lines. If we can get some decent wind tomorrow we will give it another shot to test it out.

We were having this same issue on the TI3 boat, after the rudder upgrade.

We just did a snorkel video tour of the inside of the hull and traced all the lines. There are big knots and excess line all over the place. The lines could catch on each other, the hull, hatches or anything you cram in there. We are cleaning that up.

You may have done this but, using a mirror, start by checking that all the pulleys are still hung correctly, then look for the crossed lines. Cut off dangling line and tape the knots with teflon tape. Lubricate all mechanical points, including the rudder assembly. It should now be smooth as butter.

You can use the descending rod holder tube as a guide for the lines. Put the up/down lines outside and the tiller lines inside this tube. I think this helps keep them segregated.

Lastly - Check that the knots on the T handles are big enough -our UP line slipped and disappeared into the hull! Not fun!

I just traded my 2010 for a 2013 TI and the rudder lines are messed up. How do you get to these lines and fix them once you find a problem? I think the whole system needs to be removed and reinstalled.

Easiest, is to release one rudder line from the rear rudder handle, pull it back to the rear hatch and untangle. Then carefully route the loose line back to the rear-sear hatch and reattach. As long as the UP line isn't involved in the tangle, that should fix it.

Do the 2013 Rudder lines, with the plastic tubing, route across the rear hatch opening or around it?

As far as I know, all factory AI & TI rear lines are held away from the rear hatch opening. :)
